Once a month MudBlosm Connections spends the day handing out items at Potluck in the Park. On August 27, 2023 board members and volunteers handed out clothing, shoes, socks, hygiene items, sleeping bags, blankets and tents to the 230 people having a hot meal at Potluck in the Park.
Frequently when people think of those in need, they think of people with addiction or mental health issues. The people there are diverse, some could be your neighbors or coworkers.
A veteran we spoke to had been on the streets because his apartment had burned down through no fault of his own and there wasn’t an affordable place for him to go to. He did seek out services and after years of red tape, paperwork and waiting he was finally able to get an apartment. With the high cost of groceries on his fixed income, he still enjoys lunch at Potluck in the Park.
So many people needed clothing and shoes, one person told us theirs were stolen as they slept. Imagine waking up and your only pair of shoes have been stolen and you have no way to get new ones. We had people desperate for coats and blankets as they had nothing to keep them warm at night. Hygiene supplies, socks and underwear were the most requested items. One item, like a gently used pair of shoes, can make such a difference in someone else’s world.
